Lancashire Arts and Crafts

I recently visited the Gallery at the Wharf, a designer-led gallery that is run by the Art and Craft Guild of Lancashire. The gallery provides members of the Guild the opportunity to exhibit their work and generate exposure and sales.

The range of art and craft mediums on display and for sale is truly diverse with textiles, ceramics, photography, jewellery, furniture and fine art all available.

Featured Artists and Craftspeople

I first found out about the gallery through a former art teacher of mine, Diana Morrison, who is a member of the guild and has some unique textiles available in the gallery.

Some of the great work by other featured designers can be seen on the gallery website under the Exhibitors section while a full list of the Art and Craft Guild members is also worth exploring.

The Wharf

The gallery is located at Burscough-Wharf, a historic canal side site which has been developed since late 2008. The buildings now house a range of leisure and retail attractions underpinned by arts and crafts and the local creative industries.

Quality and Originality

Personally, what I think makes this gallery stand out from other craft centres is the quality. The Guild describe how their most significant principle is that:

“members are selected for the quality and originality of their work as well as a commitment to their art and craft.”

This focus on quality and originality certainly shows. For anyone looking for an extra special gift or if you simply want to treat yourself to something unique I’d strongly recommend a visit.
